What’s Special About Teaching 3 to 10 Year Olds?

Teaching over 2,000 kids across 10+ years has shown us 3 key differences:

1) Cognitive growth

At this age, children typically have a greater capacity for understanding instructions and grasping water safety than children who are 3 years old or younger. This enables more structured lessons where your words hold greater impact and distractions are fewer.

2) Emotional currents

Cognitive growth can lead to varied attitudes towards water: some children might develop a fear for it and will require you to build their confidence, while others may display overconfidence & recklessness, and will need extra guidance on safety.

3) Stroke Development

With increased strength and coordination, children between 3 to 10 years old can tackle more challenging swimming strokes, such as the freestyle and backstroke - lifelong skills that are great not only for water safety, but for play with other kids too!

As with any age group, FUN should be at the center of all your lessons.

Considerations like these shape the missions we teach in our swimming schools, which are the exact ones you will learn in Superhero Swim University!

3 to 10 Years Old Mission Map:

1. The Splash Battle (Introduction to the Pool)

Every lesson begins the same - with the Splash Battle! Splashing is a great way to gently acclimate your child to the water and set a playful mood for the lesson ahead.

2. The Crawler (Wall Climbing)

The wall is the Superhero base where your child feels safe and in control. It's only right we get comfortable at the base first before taking on the big villains!

3. The Bubbler (Building Breath Control)

Breath hold is a key enabler to some of the subsequent missions we'll be facing like kicking feet and diving to the bottom - always build up from the foundations first.

4. The Kowabunga Kicker (Kicking Feet)

Has your little one discovered that little propeller they've got yet? Start this mission off with a kick-board and then gradually remove reliance on the floatation device.

5. The Daring Diver (Submersion to the Bottom)

There's toys that need to be rescued! The Daring Diver will build on your child's skill of breath control and send them on a rescue mission to the ocean floor.

6. The Super Cadet (Swimming Independently)

With many of the foundational missions under our belt, we can start combining them all into The Super Cadet - an independent swimmer who wields scoops and kicks!

7. The Fearless Floater (The Back Float)

We've been active! Now it's time to relax and calmly enter a back float - a critical water survival skill.

8. The Kannonballer (Jumping in the pool)

The most fun mission of them all - here your child gets to launch themselves into the pool like The Kannonballer. It's key to build up your child's understanding of when is appropriate to do so, and when it isn't.

Hi, I'm Coach Jacob!

I was only 6 months old when my parents placed me in swim lessons. Ever since then, many of my favorite childhood memories were around the water. I loved it so much that I continued to swim all the way through to high school, where I was part of the swim team.

However, it didn’t take me long to realize that competitive swimming wasn’t for me. It was boring, monotonous and completely lacking in the fun of swimming that attracted me to take it up as a hobby in the first place.

Upon arriving in Florida, one of the first jobs I landed was a soccer coach position at the YMCA. While working there I realized that they needed assistance in other areas and that I could help fill in those gaps. This led to opportunities in aquatics, lifeguarding, and most important of all - they also needed assistance in teaching swim lessons.

So I jumped at the opportunity to help and parents were so impressed by my approach and their kids’ swimming progress that they began to ask me to teach their children privately.

As time went on my swim lesson side gig turned into about 20 lessons a week. Interestingly enough, one of my clients turned out to be a very prominent businessman - the CEO and Co-Founder of HotelPlanner. He quickly pointed out to me the passion and talent I had and urged me to start my own business teaching swim lessons. So I took a leap of faith and started my own business called Superhero Swim Academy.

Since then, I’ve been able to break through the ceiling of how much positive impact we can have by helping young children learn how to swim. Only a couple of years ago I was maxxed out at 20 lessons a week, but as of today we have over 30 coaches, 7 in-person swimming locations and have taught over 2,000 kids.

To grow our impact beyond Florida, during the COVID lockdown I started posting swimming content on platforms like TikTok, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram where we’ve now built a community of millions of parents worldwide that watch our videos on a daily basis.

Although our impact was broad, it was not as deep as I’d liked it to be. So now we also help parents who are serious about helping their children learn how to swim do so with our proprietary online programs - the impact of which isn’t limited by geography, and the price of which is a fraction of what parents would typically pay for in-person swimming lessons.

Upon graduating high school I went to college to study business but after a few months I realized that this wasn’t the path for me either. This led to an impulsive and courageous decision to leave everything I knew in Michigan and move to Florida. With only a truck and $2,000.00 to my name, I drove down to Florida hoping to somehow figure out where to go next.

Upon arriving in Florida, one of the first jobs I landed was a soccer coach position at the YMCA.
