What’s Special About Teaching 6 Month to 3 Year Olds?

Teaching over 2,000 kids across 10+ years has shown us 3 key differences:

1) It's all about FUN & baby-steps

With kids this young, forget lectures on the importance of swimming - their language is FUN. Your lessons will be substantially easier if your child has a positive association with the water, so fill your lessons with play, toys and games. Because of this, the skill progression should be much more incremental too.

2) Water Safety is Paramount

Whilst older children may be able to get away with dangerous aquatic situations - toddlers will not. They are weak and often cannot even pick their heads up out of the water, so teaching your child water skills like grabbing onto the wall and the almighty ‘Flip and Float’ could be life-saving.

3) Focus on the foundations

Trying to rush progress will only slow it down and unnecessarily stress both of you out. Lay a strong foundation first, and patiently build from there. Your child should master basic skills like wall hold and holding breath before even thinking about any kind of strokes. Slow and steady wins the race!

Considerations like these shape the missions we teach in our swimming schools, which are the exact ones you will learn in Superhero Swim University!

6 Month to 3 Year Old Mission Map:

Mission 1: Wall Hold & Wall Safety

Here we learn how to hold onto the wall independently, so your child gets  comfortable and safe in the water as soon as possible.

Mission 2: Wall Crawl

With a firm grip on the wall, we can now start moving across it! This mission will be your child's first experience of mobility and spatial awareness in the water.

Mission 3: Submersion & Breath Control

In submersion we will go underwater for the first time! It should be a controlled submersion to ensure their first impression of being underwater is a positive one.

Mission 4: Climbing out & Jumping In

Safely getting into and out of the pool is a part of swimming too! And that's exactly what we will learn in this mission with the elbow and knee sequences.

Mission 5: The Back Float

The back float is an essential water safety skill that also lays a foundation for many of the subsequent moves your child will go on to develop, like the Flip and Float, and the back crawl (eventually)!

Mission 6: Kicking Feet

With many missions under their belt, your child can be introduced to basic kicking movements - their very own mini-propeller!

Mission 7: Swimming Solo

Here we are compounding on top of the kicking skills we developed so your child can swim towards you or the pool wall independently. Yes, completely independently!

Mission 8: The Flip and Float

The final boss. The skill that most parents usually have the hardest time teaching, but also the most critical for your child’s water-safety! Here we teach a controlled flip and float, so your child can independently deal with potentially dangerous swimming situations.

Hi, I'm Coach Jacob!

I was only 6 months old when my parents placed me in swim lessons. Ever since then, many of my favorite childhood memories were around the water. I loved it so much that I continued to swim all the way through to high school, where I was part of the swim team.

However, it didn’t take me long to realize that competitive swimming wasn’t for me. It was boring, monotonous and completely lacking in the fun of swimming that attracted me to take it up as a hobby in the first place.

Upon arriving in Florida, one of the first jobs I landed was a soccer coach position at the YMCA. While working there I realized that they needed assistance in other areas and that I could help fill in those gaps. This led to opportunities in aquatics, lifeguarding, and most important of all - they also needed assistance in teaching swim lessons.

So I jumped at the opportunity to help and parents were so impressed by my approach and their kids’ swimming progress that they began to ask me to teach their children privately.

As time went on my swim lesson side gig turned into about 20 lessons a week. Interestingly enough, one of my clients turned out to be a very prominent businessman - the CEO and Co-Founder of HotelPlanner. He quickly pointed out to me the passion and talent I had and urged me to start my own business teaching swim lessons. So I took a leap of faith and started my own business called Superhero Swim Academy.

Since then, I’ve been able to break through the ceiling of how much positive impact we can have by helping young children learn how to swim. Only a couple of years ago I was maxxed out at 20 lessons a week, but as of today we have over 30 coaches, 7 in-person swimming locations and have taught over 2,000 kids.

To grow our impact beyond Florida, during the COVID lockdown I started posting swimming content on platforms like TikTok, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram where we’ve now built a community of millions of parents worldwide that watch our videos on a daily basis.

Although our impact was broad, it was not as deep as I’d liked it to be. So now we also help parents who are serious about helping their children learn how to swim do so with our proprietary online programs - the impact of which isn’t limited by geography, and the price of which is a fraction of what parents would typically pay for in-person swimming lessons.

Upon graduating high school I went to college to study business but after a few months I realized that this wasn’t the path for me either. This led to an impulsive and courageous decision to leave everything I knew in Michigan and move to Florida. With only a truck and $2,000.00 to my name, I drove down to Florida hoping to somehow figure out where to go next.

Upon arriving in Florida, one of the first jobs I landed was a soccer coach position at the YMCA.
