Why starting in the bathtub is your baby's superpower

Teaching 2,000+ kids over the last 10+ years has revealed to us the difference in swimming ability between kids who were bathtub-trained, and those who weren’t, is night and day. Here's why you should get started in the bathub:

1) Immediate positive association

The longer you delay putting your child into the water, the longer you allow fear and anxiety to build up and grow into a hindrance to your child's swimming progress.

Thankfully, children younger than 6 months are usually very welcoming to the water - which creates the perfect opening for you to start building a loving relationship with the water and save you from stressful emotions in the pool.

2) Your home, your enviornment

Whilst they're young, your bathtub is as good, or in fact, even better, than a pool. Your child’s environment (including water temperature) is fully under your control so you can set the conditions that are just right for your child.

A standard bathtub will give you all the space you need, as we won't yet be practising any kind of swimming or even wall-holding skills at such an early age.

3) Save money on the inevitable

Raising a child is expensive enough already. Save yourself from spending thousands of dollars on swimming coaches by prepping from early.

The bathtub is free, and will help you minimise the quantity of lessons required, or even avoid them altogether.

If you already know that you want your child to learn how to swim - then why delay getting started?

Make small splashes now. Prepare for big waves in the future.

The 3 Drills To Practice in the Bathtub:

1. The Back Float

The earlier we master comfortability on their backs, the faster your child will progress when time comes to 'The Flip and Float' - a water survival skill that any unprepared child would struggle with.

2. Breath Control (on command)

Whilst infants can hold their breath by instinct, they cannot do it on command. With the use of verbal conditioning, you can make your baby's breath hold in the pool an absolute breeze!

3. Submersion (going underwater)

In submersion we will go underwater for the first time! It should be a controlled submersion to ensure their first impression of being underwater is a positive one!

Hi, I'm Coach Jacob!

I was only 6 months old when my parents placed me in swim lessons. Ever since then, many of my favorite childhood memories were around the water. I loved it so much that I continued to swim all the way through to high school, where I was part of the swim team.

However, it didn’t take me long to realize that competitive swimming wasn’t for me. It was boring, monotonous and completely lacking in the fun of swimming that attracted me to take it up as a hobby in the first place.

Upon arriving in Florida, one of the first jobs I landed was a soccer coach position at the YMCA. While working there I realized that they needed assistance in other areas and that I could help fill in those gaps. This led to opportunities in aquatics, lifeguarding, and most important of all - they also needed assistance in teaching swim lessons.

So I jumped at the opportunity to help and parents were so impressed by my approach and their kids’ swimming progress that they began to ask me to teach their children privately.

As time went on my swim lesson side gig turned into about 20 lessons a week. Interestingly enough, one of my clients turned out to be a very prominent businessman - the CEO and Co-Founder of HotelPlanner. He quickly pointed out to me the passion and talent I had and urged me to start my own business teaching swim lessons. So I took a leap of faith and started my own business called Superhero Swim Academy.

Since then, I’ve been able to break through the ceiling of how much positive impact we can have by helping young children learn how to swim. Only a couple of years ago I was maxxed out at 20 lessons a week, but as of today we have over 30 coaches, 7 in-person swimming locations and have taught over 2,000 kids to date.

To grow our impact beyond Florida, during the COVID lockdown I started posting swimming content on platforms like TikTok, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram where we’ve now built a community of millions of parents worldwide that watch our daily videos.

Although our impact was broad, it was not as deep as I’d liked it to be. So now we also help parents who are serious about helping their children learn how to swim do so with our proprietary online programs - the impact of which isn’t limited by geography, and the price of which is a fraction of what parents would typically pay for in-person swimming lessons.

Upon graduating high school I went to college to study business but after a few months I realized that this wasn’t the path for me either. This led to an impulsive and courageous decision to leave everything I knew in Michigan and move to Florida. With only a truck and $2,000.00 to my name, I drove down to Florida hoping to somehow figure out where to go next.

Upon arriving in Florida, one of the first jobs I landed was a soccer coach position at the YMCA.
